Homemade Berry Fruit Snacks

We used to eat a ton of fruit snacks as kids. My favorites were the gushers. During the beginning of all of my pregnancies, I was extremely sick and one of the things I could tolerate eating was fruit snacks. Not a whole lot of nutrients there, but at least I didn’t throw them up. My kids love fruit snacks, but I decided that I didn’t want them eating the store bought fruit snacks. Who knows what’s actually in them, plus they all have some sort of food dye in them. I decided to come up with a homemade berry fruit snacks recipe.

I always use my fruit snack making kit. This thing is awesome. You can use this kit for other things too. You can make tiny chocolate bites, frozen yogurt bites or make cute little ice cubes. Plus everything in this kit is dishwasher safe, which is fantastic.

My kids love these homemade fruit snacks. They seriously can’t get enough of them. I now use them as bribery. That’s right, I bribe my kids and I have no shame about it. I have never seen my kid run so fast to pick up their room when I say, “I will give you 5 fruit snacks if you go clean your room.” The great thing is that I am bribing them with something healthy, but they think it is a treat.

In order to make these fruit snacks you will need gelatin. I recommend getting unflavored beef gelatin. It actually has some health benefits.

Description

Fruit snacks from the store aren’t the healthiest snack for your kids, although, I will buy them occasionally.  These homemade fruit snacks are healthier and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • zest of 1 orange
  • zest of half a lemon
  • 2 heaping cups fresh strawberries, halved
  • 1 heaping cup fresh blueberries
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 cup beef gelatin

Instructions

  1. In a blender, blend together all ingredients except beef gelatin.Blended up ingredients for your fruit snacks
  2. Pour mixture into a medium sauce pan. Sprinkle gelatin in and let it bloom for a minute or two. (Bloom just means the liquid is starting to soak into the gelatin and it actually looks like a brain).Gelatin blooming with ingredients for homemade fruit snacks
  3. Stir the gelatin in and heat on the stove until hot. Do not boil.
  4. Now transfer the mixture, while it’s hot, into the fruit snack silicone molds. The droppers work really well.My son transferring the warm liquid to the fruit snack molds

Notes

If you want a really smooth fruit snack, you can strain the seeds and flesh out of your mixture before adding the gelatin. I don’t do this because I think they taste great the way they are, plus the seeds and flesh are a good source of fiber.
