Baked French Toast Sticks

These baked french toast sticks are scrumptious. You almost don’t need any maple syrup for these. My husband would probably disagree with that, but he loves sugar.

French toast sticks are a favorite breakfast for my kids. I was buying the frozen french toast sticks from Sam’s Club, but then I looked at all the stuff I can’t pronounce on the package. I didn’t want to deprive my kids of french toast sticks, but I also didn’t want them eating stuff with all those preservatives. These baked french toast sticks took a few tries to get just right. You will have to tell me what you think.

This makes a big batch so you will need two cookie sheets. (These are my favorite cookie sheets. They are huge and so durable). It is so nice to have these french toast sticks in the freezer. Then I can say yes to my kids when they beg to have them.

If you prefer french toast instead of french toast sticks, this recipe works perfectly, with a few changes; do not cut your bread (obviously), omit the cinnamon and sugar coating, use 10 slices of Texas toast instead of 8, and finally cook it about 5 to 6 minutes on each side on a preheated griddle. I set my griddle to 375 degrees. Also, this french toast is perfect for freezing. Let it cool on a cooling rack and then layer parchment paper, french toast, parchment paper, french toast and so on. Then put it in a freezer bag, remove the air, seal and freeze. Thaw in the microwave on the quick defrost setting for a minute or two, or you can put it directly in the toaster.

  5. In a separate small bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar for the coating.Cinnamon and sugar for baked french toast sticks
  6. Dip each strip of bread into the wet mixture. Let excess drip off and place the strip on the prepared cookie sheet.
  7. Once all strips are done, sprinkle half the cinnamon and sugar coating mixture onto the strips. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, switching the cookie sheets to opposite oven racks halfway through.
  8. After 15 minutes is up, take cookie sheets out and flip over each strip. Sprinkle the other side of each strip with the rest of the cinnamon and sugar mixture. Put cookie sheets back in the oven and bake for another 15 minutes, switching the cookie sheets to opposite oven racks halfway through again.
  9. Now enjoy with a little pure maple syrup or freeze.

Notes

To Freeze: Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper.  Place baked french toast sticks on the parchment paper, ensuring that they are not touching.  Flash freeze for 3 to 4 hours, or until they are completely frozen.  Place in a freezer bag.Freezer friendly and delicious french toast sticks

When ready to prepare:  You can put them from frozen into the toaster and toast them until they are heated through.  Another option is to wrap desired amount of french toast sticks in a paper towel and then microwave them on the defrost setting for about a minute.  Turn them over and heat them on high for 30 seconds or until heated through.
