Description

Stromboli is an absolute favorite meal in our house.  It might not be the healthiest recipe, but it is oh so delicious.  I think it tastes best dipped in pizza sauce, but you can eat it without the sauce if you want.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3/4 pound deli ham
  • 1/3 pound hard salami
  • 1/3 pound pepperoni
  • shredded mozzarella cheese
  • shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 recipe of my honey garlic pizza dough, you can substitute 1 loaf of frozen bread dough
  • pizza sauce for dipping, optional but recommended

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a cookie sheet with foil. Spray the foil with cooking spray.
  2. If you are using my pizza dough recipe, make the dough and let rise for the instructed amount of time. Then cut dough ball in half. If you are using frozen bread dough, thaw it as instructed on the package. Cut bread loaf in half.
  3. In a small bowl, beat egg with a fork. Add Parmesan cheese and mix well.
  4. Roll out half the bread dough into a rough rectangle.Rolled out dough for Stromboli
  5. Brush half of the dough with the egg and Parmesan mixture.Half of the dough, for Stromboli, brushed with Parmesan and egg mixture
  6. Now layer about 6 to 8 pieces of salami, 4 slices of ham and 10 to 12 pieces of pepperoni. Honestly, I don’t count how many pieces I put on there, so this is just an estimate. I just put as much as I think looks good. You can do more or less depending on your personal preference. Layer meat for Stromboli
  7. Next layer both the mozzarella cheese and the cheddar cheese on top of the meat. Again, I don’t have amounts for the cheese because I just put as much as I think looks right. Look at the picture for a reference.
  8. Layer salami, ham and pepperoni again.
  9. Layer cheeses again. End with another layer of salami, ham and pepperoni.
  10. Take the empty side of the dough and stretch it over top of the meat and cheese and press it down to seal it.Seal the dough
  11. Fold over the edges and press and seal again.
  12. Lift the stromboli and place it on your prepared cookie sheet, seam side down and tuck the ends under. Brush the tops with the egg and Parmesan mixture.Stromboli ready to go in the oven
  13. Repeat these steps with the other half of the dough.
  14. Bake for 30 minutes total, 15 minutes on the top rack and 15 minutes on the bottom rack. Finished stromboli on a foil lined pan
  15. Let cool for about 5 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into slices. Serve with pizza sauce for dipping.

Notes

To Freeze:  Prepare as directed except do not brush the tops with egg and Parmesan mixture and do not bake.  Flash freeze for 3 to 4 hours.  Once fully frozen wrap tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil.

When ready to prepare: Place on a foil lined cookie sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray.  Cover with plastic wrap.  Thaw in the fridge for  48 hours.  Take out of the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 45 minutes.  Brush tops with egg and Parmesan mixture.  Bake as directed, adding 10 to 15 more minutes.
